A young Geoffrey Chaucer, who came of age as the disease ramped up in England, wrote in the shadow of the Black Death. Without ever mentioning the affliction by name, Chaucer captured a world defined by widespread illness and social upheaval, but also by remarkable human resilience. Witness to a period of profound turbulence and vibrant transformation, the ambitious and incisive medieval writer folded the uncertainties of the age into his stories.

In recent centuries, since the advent of modern science, most medicine has become a combination of art and science (both basic and applied, under the umbrella of medical science).

The knowledge of what happens at the cellular and molecular level in the tissues being stitched arises through science.
