Said to be cultivated through an exceptional mind and body connection, one that is derived through meditation with specific intention, Siddhis can include powers such as telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, the ability to heal, levitation, flying, becoming very small, becoming invisible, walking through walls, being in two places at once, etc.
In Patanjali’s Yoga Sastra he discusses these supernatural powers and how to get them through specific meditations, techniques, and mantras. These powers are believed to come from the expanded consciousness that is available when you realize your oneness with the absolute.
Whether a yogi should strive to attain these powers or not, however, is another story.
There are many people in the world today who have developed these powers. But, according to many lineages and yogic masters, a yogi’s goal should not be to receive the powers of the Siddhis. In some traditions, striving for Siddhis means that you will forego being spiritually realized in this lifetime and ultimately distracted from the original purpose of yoga: enlightenment.
