Imagine this scenario: you’re in fifth grade, and the annoying bully who sits next to you likes to lash out when you’re trying to write something. His method is to grab the end of your pencil while you’re writing and move the pen around to make a mess of your paper. Of course, you did all the usual things, told him to “cut”, tried to pull the pencil away. But nothing changes. Then one day, you don’t do normal things. Instead, you place your free hand over his hand as he grabs the pencil and holds his hand on the pencil. Instead of trying to pull away, you lock your hand in place. Now, he’s trying to pull away, because the situation took a completely unexpected turn, and he somehow got stuck.

Self-Defense RewrittenImagine this scenario: You are playing with your favorite stuffed animal, and your older brother tries to take it away from you. His usual response is to hug his toy tightly to his chest, saying, “It’s mine! You can’t have it! However, this time, instead of pulling the toy to your chest, you grab your sibling’s arm (who is holding the stuffed animal) and pull it to your chest, saying, “It’s mine, you can.” Now, being her brother, you feel justified in tweaking the balance of power a bit. So you sink your baby teeth into his wrist. Now, he’s yelping and struggling to break free of the death grip you have on his arm. What started out as a fight over his toy has turned into a fight over his brother’s arm. What started when you tried to escape him has turned into him desperate to escape you. This is what I call “rewriting”.

When a burglar strikes, he has a scenario planned. He has already determined the time and place for action. He tried to reduce the number of variables to basically two possible outcomes. Either your potential victim will play the role of the complacent victim, or the role of the prey in distress. Rewriting means changing the plot, taking the encounter in an unexpected direction, altering the plot. Change the narrative, change the outcome.

I have already introduced the concept of “Single-Scenario Tactical Solutions,” which is an approach to teaching self-defense by teaching a simple movement concept that can be applied to deal with a wide variety of tactical problems. The core movement I teach is based on natural biomechanics and chosen for its value as a method of rewriting. It’s an incredibly powerful approach to self-defense and it’s become central to my teaching.

Of course, I can only present the concept on a blog, but my rewritten self-defense DVD is available.
