Introducing Greg McDermott …
Gregory M. McDermott earned his Master of Arts in Applied Finance while attending the International Rotary Fellowship at the Macquarie University Money and Banking Center in Sydney, Australia. In 1988, he met foreign exchange trading as a professor at Macquarie University, who headed the Australian-New Zealand bank FX Trading Desk. Greg studied foreign exchange markets and options trading as part of his MA in Applied Finance curriculum. He received his BA in Financial Management from St. Joseph University.
Greg was hired by the Timber Hill currency options group on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) in 1991. He began his career with the American Stock Exchange as a clerk for the XMI Index and Equity Options. In early 1992, he moved to the New York Stock Exchange, where he worked as a crude oil options and futures clerk. He passed the membership exam with excellent results and began trading crude oil options in the summer of 1993.
Rockrimmon Securities, the AMEX market labeling firm, hired Greg to open a trading division at PHLX in the fall of 1993. He was responsible for hiring and training all staff on the floor, monitoring the intraday and intraday risk profile of each market maker, and hedging the PHLX group’s overnight risk. In addition to managing the firm’s trading operations, Greg was a market maker at Dell Computer options, one of the busiest stock options in the country. He traded Dell Computer Options to a crowd that grew from 6 to nearly 100 market makers and worked with our very own Ron Yagnieri.
Greg’s success with the PHLX market makers at Rockrimmon Securities helped set the stage for the creation of the stock options division. Following the management split, Rockrimmon Securities became the market maker firm JAS Securities and Gateway Partners, a dedicated division of PHLX options.
In late 1999, JAS Securities partners asked Greg to head the freelance trading office while still running their FLX Floor Trading division. He supervised the freelance and DTR qualified of the International Securities Exchange (ISE).
Since leaving the gym, Greg has made an exceptional career in the wholesale mortgage business. Most recently, he was National Sales Manager at PNC Bank Home Equity Partners.
Greg joined Options University in April 2008 as Chief Currency Strategist on Ron Yagnieri’s insistent and strong personal recommendation based on his experience with Greg as a professional trader.
