I remember life not so long ago. 13 years ago, I didn’t have a fucking clue about money. And my financial situation reflected it: we lived paycheck to paycheck. We had maxed out credit cards. We didn’t have any savings. We didn’t live extravagantly by any means (apart from buying books that is…) We knew in the future, we wanted to have children. I desperately wanted to be home with my kids instead of having to do the daycare route. And I also didn’t want to be stuck doing an office job for the rest of my life. Somewhere deep inside me, I knew there must be a better way of doing it. I knew there were other people out there in the world creating lives of freedom and abundance, and I wanted to be one of them.
And so I made a really clear, conscious decision. I was going to become a student of money. I was going to find out what other people knew and start applying it. I knew it wasn’t rocket science. I knew it was just something I hadn’t learned yet. So I applied myself to it. I read books and took courses. I instituted everything I learned. And really rapidly, things started shifting.
We paid out our debt. We cancelled our credit cards. We started creating more abundance than we’d ever experienced before. And just a few years later when we began having kids, not only was I able to quit my job and stay home with our baby, my husband was too. In the years since, we’ve gone on to live in some of the most beautiful (and remote) places in Australia AND live our lives centred around our values (family, gentleness, creativity and freedom). All while continuing to build our net worth, which is now close to $3 million.
I’m not talking about the hustle, either. I’ve done it while working on average 10 hours a week. Because what good is a business if life isn’t truly good too? I have children to watch bloom, trashy romance to read, art to make and long baths to have. I feel incredibly blessed that we’ve been able to have so much family time and adventure together, and have even homeschooled our kids for a few years.
I see how much good can come from abundance. How much it has changed our family’s life for the better. How we’ve been able to invest in education for our children, and how we’ve been supported by our nest egg when we’ve suffered chronic illness. We’ve discovered how wealth can be a fuel for good change in the world. How wealth doesn’t necessarily buying more or destroying the planet – but having the freedom to choose more sustainable, eco-friendly options (organic can be fucking pricey!) AND redirect funds into charity work.
We’ve been able to fund some philanthropic projects behind our wildest dreams. We’ve built a library in Vietnam (through Room to Read), helped build a school room in West Ghana (through Pencils of Promise) and funded over $40,000 to help children in Kenya. We’ve been able to help Australian Wildlife Conservancy buy more land for wildlife. We were able to send over 500 baby carriers to Greece during the Syrian Refugee Crisis. We’ve also made 666 loans through Kiva and are in the top 1% of Kiva lenders worldwide. It’s an incredible thing indeed when I can donate more money each year than the salary I used to have!
I’m really blooming passionate about helping women be able to create the same kind of freedom, grace and abundance for themselves and their families.
I’m so grateful for the journey I’ve been on and the other women who have taught me what is possible. I’ve learned so much, and I’m happy to pay it forward.
