Based on testimonials from former students and historians, the film outlines a rich panel on black culture and capoeira in Brazil. Produced in 2005 by Mestre Bimba, Capoeira Iluminada was shown in cinemas in several Brazilian capitals and participated in festivals, including the Festival do Rio.
In 2007, the film was released on DVD by Biscoito Fino, and its first editions were soon sold out.
