Why the 2015 pullback in model equity curves

We are not going to try to hide the fact that 2015 was a difficult year for ETF Sector models, but the reasons behind this are over and very unusual, here’s why …

Most of the negative performance in 2015 is due to the 3-day drop from August 19 to 24. In fact, on 8/19, just before the S & P’s historic 3-day dip, our Moderate model increased approximately 1% over the year and was in line with market performance.

Unfortunately, our sell signals occurred on 08/21. This means that we will exit the long positions the next day, which was the extraordinary gap on the 24th. This led to unusually bad exits.

The extreme gap also caused the model to shift to a short position at this same extreme level, and over the next two months this was also halted with losses.

In previous “fast” corrections, the model was short before most of the sell-off or had defensive positions such as bonds or gold, so it didn’t suffer as much damage.

In conclusion, the model is designed to take advantage of dips that last more than 3 days of downturn, and if the market had continued to decline, the model would have performed quite well. Also, if the accident happened a day later, the models’ losses would be half of what they currently show.

As a result, from the sale of 2015 and early 2016, the models began a new cycle of leadership in the Sector, and 2016 has been one of the best years for the model and the year is about to end.
