I’ve been able to travel to over 20 countries, and in almost all cases, I spend less money than I do when I’m actually at home. With these 10 tips, I’m going to teach you how you’ll be able to save THOUSANDS of dollars when you travel. Because the more you save when you travel, the more you can travel! Travel More, Spend Less! Airfare Let’s start with airfare, since that is traditionally the most expensive part of any travel.

1 Utilize Frequent Flyer Miles for Almost Free Plane Tickets

I could write a book about this (oh wait, I have!) but the premise is simple. Earn frequent flyers and then use them to fly anywhere in the world for under $100. The hang up for most people is that they believe you can only earn frequent flyer miles through flying, but in fact, that’s only one of MANY ways to earn frequent flyer miles. In fact, I’ve earned over 2 million in the last 3 years and exactly 0.4% have been from flying. You can earn miles huge chunks of frequent flyer miles through credit card sign up bonuses, shopping online, using your credit card for everyday purchases, and promotions. Through these methods, in less than 3 months, you could earn a free plane ticket anywhere in the world.

2 Make Budget Airlines Your Best Friends

If you are paying for flights, make sure to check out budget airlines. Big carriers, like United, American Airlines, and British Airways can cost a fortune. But especially in Europe, with airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet, and in Asia, with Air Asia, you can get plane tickets between countries for under $100. Quick Example: I was able to fly from Osaka, Japan to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with Air Asia for less than $150 roundtrip. That’s a 7 hour international flight each way!

3 Booking Tickets

When the Time is Right Knowing when to buy tickets is another key to getting cheap airfare. There are three main rules to follow: 1. Airline tickets will open up 330 days before your travel date. If you get in right away, you may be able to snag some of the first tickets, which will be cheaper than tickets down the road. This is especially helpful to remember if you are planning on traveling to a large world event, like the Olympics or World Cup. Not only will prices be sky high for these tickets if you wait, but they also might not be available at all. 2. If you can’t book early, book tickets 6 weeks before traveling. If you don’t get in super early, the best thing to do is wait. Ticket prices will begin to drop about 6 weeks prior to the departure date, when airlines are looking to fill empty seats. 3. Tuesday is usually the cheapest day to fly on. If you have flexibility in your trip, try fly out and back on Tuesdays. This is when the ticket prices are the lowest. The second best day to fly out: Wednesday. Accommodations The second biggest expense for most people is hotels. This boggles my mind because there are so many other options.

4 Housesitting

Housesitting is becoming increasingly popular around the world, and it’s an amazing way to get free accommodations in some incredible properties. You get free accommodations and in return, you’ll be asked to possibly take care of an animal, do a little gardening, or maybe just stay in the house and keep it safe. Housesits can range for all lengths of time, from a few days to a few years, and can is most popular in Canada, Europe, and Australia, although they can be found in other areas as well.

5 Rent an Apartment

Renting an apartment instead of staying in a hotel can not only save you tons of money, but it can also give you a more authentic travel experience AND be more enjoyable, since you’ll oftentimes have conveniences like a kitchen and washing machine. It’s can be especially cost-effective for larger groups like a family who would normally have to rent 2-3 hotel rooms.

6 Stay at the World’s Nicest Hotels…For Free

Just like airlines and frequent flyer miles, hotels give out hotel points which can earn you free nights. Earning those hotel points works the same way: You can get them from actually staying at hotels, but the majority of the points can be earned through credit card signups, online shopping, paying with a hotel credit card, and promotions. If you’re someone who needs to stay in a hotel, this is the way to go. Transportation

7 Rent a Car…The Right Way

Just like renting an apartment, renting a car can oftentimes be cheaper than other transportation options and also allow you to have more freedom. One major key to saving money when renting a car is to use a credit card that offers rental car insurance as part of the perks. This means that you can deny the rental car insurance, which is normally as much as, if not more, than the actual car rental. By only paying for the actual rental, you can get cars for as little as $10 a day.

8 Check for Weekly or Monthly Rail Passes

Another great way to get around a country or region is by train. If you’re planning a trip of at least a week, getting a weekly rail pass, such as the Eurail (which covers most country in all of Europe) or the JapanRail Pass (which naturally covers all of Japan), you can save yourself TONS of money. Example: 1 roundtrip ticket on the bullet train between Tokyo and Kyoto, the two most popular tourist spots in Japan will cost you the same price as a 7 day Japan Rail Pass, which allows you to use that same bullet train to go anywhere in the entire country. 9 Get a SIM Card for Using Your Phone Abroad

You’re traveling internationally, but you still want to stay connected.I get it. But one of the worst things you can do is take your phone abroad and use it as normal. You’ll get charged something outrageous, like $1 a minute. Don’t do that! If you’ve got a smartphone, it’s super easy to use it abroad and not pay huge fees. The key is getting a SIM card for the country you’ll be in. Before leaving the country, “unlock” your phone, which can be done by calling your carrier and asking them to unlock it. Then, when you arrive in the country, go to a phone store and ask for a SIM card. Put the SIM card in your phone, and you’ll be on the local network. All this will typically cost you about $15 for 2 weeks worth of data, texting, and talk. A steal, especially considering I usually use my smartphone as my GPS.

10 Eat When the Locals Eat

Saving money even on eating…Bet you didn’t think of that! Outside of the airfare, hotels, and transportation, food will most likely be your other big cost. And that’s not a bad thing, because if you’re like me, you love eating new foods while traveling. But that doesn’t mean you can’t also get a good meal and save some money. In many cultures, lunch is the big meal of the day. And in most places, lunch specials are commonplace. You’ll be getting the same amount and type of food as you would at dinner, and pay about 40% less. So take advantage of these specials, and eat your big meal at lunch and follow that with a lighter, cheaper, dinner. So there you go, the top 10 tips for saving money while traveling. Follow these, and you’ll be laughing at how much you used to spend…all the way to the bank!
