Henry Akins began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rixon Gracie Academy on Pico Boulevard in West Los Angeles. .. Henry then took charge of the school and became the head instructor there until 2008, when he was forced to stop due to a back injury.
Soon after starting work, he became the secretary of the academy and spent 70 hours a week there, observing and participating in all classes. In 1997, the school moved to Pacific Palisades, where Henry taught and assisted head instructor Luis Heredia, and participated and trained in all classes taught by Rixon. During these years, Henry had the opportunity to train with Rixon and help him prepare for fights in Japan. In 2000, the academy moved again to Wilshire Boulevard in West Los Angeles. By this time, Henry had already started teaching at the school.
In February 2004, because of his perseverance and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophy of jiu-jitsu, Rixon Gracie presented Henry with a black belt, being only the third American at the time to receive this honor. Henry then took charge of the school and became the head instructor there until 2008, when he was forced to stop due to a back injury. Henry is now the chief jiu-jitsu instructor at Dynamix Martial Arts, and although Henry is no longer affiliated with Rixon Gracie or his association, he feels blessed to be able to share this art with others and pass on the knowledge that was taught to him by the greatest jiu-jitsu practitioner ever.
