Over the past year Keenan Cornelius has appeared virtually out of nowhere and has become one of the best known Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the world. In 2012 he became the first competitor to win double medals in every major event he competed in as a Purple Belt. Since becoming a Brown Belt he hasn’t lost momentum – he’s won double medals at every major BJJ event. he earned a place in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, Abu Dhabi (ADCC). At the same time Keenan has been dominating the Belt levels he competes in, and when he got his shot at tournaments like the Abu Dhabi Pro and Grapplers Quest, he beat some of the elite Black Belts.

But let’s be honest, why in the world should we care so much about Keenan developing so dramatically in such a short amount of time? Because that’s what separates Keenan from other top competitors… until recently he wasn’t very good! In fact he struggled extremely. As recently as 2011 Keenan went to the World Championships as a Purple Belt..and lost. Like most of the other competitors he went home with no medals. Then something changed. Keenan picked up on some concepts that the other guys weren’t doing. Once he understood these concepts and practiced them repeatedly, his game took off – and took off in a way that no one had ever done before. In just one year, he went from total obscurity to grappling celebrity.
